MARDI HIMAL & MACHHAPUCHARE TREK
POKHARA TO POKHARA
(Moderate)

The ridge and the summit that forms the South-Western lower slope of Mount Machhapuchhare (Fish Tail Mountain) is known as Mardi Himal. The Mardi Himal is one the least trekked areas of Nepal - away from the main trekking trails, tea houses and villages. It is a pleasant trek through forests that takes you up to the base camp of Mardi Himal.

DAY 01
Depart Pokhara in the morning and drive to the Tibetan Camp at Kaski. From here we set off on foot to Suikhet where we have our lunch. After lunch we start the climb, passing Phedi, up the main trail along the ridge to Dhampus, for our overnight camp.

DAY 02
After enjoying our breakfast, amidst the views of sunrise over "Fish Tail" and the bare walls of the Annapurna II, we start on, leaving the more frequented trails and tea houses. The trail climbs the ridge upwards, bringing us right in front of *'Fish Tail Mountain", where we have our lunch. The afternoon trek is through an enchanting forest which leads us to our camp, `Forest Camp` at an altitude of 2,550 M.

Day 03
We start our trek through forests rich in flora and fauna and are frequently rewarded with views of Hiunchuli and Annapurna South. Looking back you also see the terraced paddy and wheat fields of Ghandrung and the Modi Khola valley leading to the Annapurna Sanctuary. By lunch time we reach "Low Camp" at an altitude of 3,400 M. We take the afternoon at relax and enjoy the view of the 'Fish Tail Mountain' to the north and the sloping hills to the south.

DAY 04
A short steep climb takes us out of the forest and on to a ridge, which is grassy and under snow for several months of the year. The views are spectacular and make you forget all the aches and pain as we reach our camp site at 'High camp' at an altitude of 4100 M. we spend the second consecutive afternoon enjoying the scenery and acclimatizing . The mountains (Fish Tail & Annapurna South) are so close that you feel as if you could actually touch them. We retire for the night under the clear star lit night of the Himalayas.

DAY 05
After an early breakfast and equipped with a lunch box we set out for our destination which is the crest of Mardi Himal at an altitude of 5,588 M. From this spot the Fish Tail looms just in front of us while the great ice fields and ice-blue glaciers of the Sanctuary Wall lie below in the north-west. Annapurna I, highest of all is there beyond. Around us from horizon to horizon are a dozen or more glistening snow-bound giants from Dhaulagiri to the Ganesh Himal.

Because of the severe weather conditions we must start our descent by 1:00 PM, passing through 'High Camp` to our camp for the night at `Low Camp'.

DAY 06
After an unhurried breakfast we descend down through the forest and terraced fields through Siding to our campsite near the rock-strewn course of the tumbling Mardi Khola.

DAY 07
Our path from Siding follows the contour of the Mardi Khola through valley and pastures. We pass through Gurung and Tamang Villages alive with activity and camp at an appropriate location in the fields.
