3 days Tarutao Island Bike Ride

Due to its remote location, the island was chosen as a prisoner camp that received its first inmates in 1937. There were two camps established on the island, one for ordinary prisoners and another one for ordinary and political prisoners. During the days of World War II the prisoners were almost forgotten and food supply to the island was slow. The inmates started to hijack passing trade ships to survive on the goods they could bring back to the island. In 1946, a commando of the Royal British Army cleared the island from the "pirates" and the island remained uninhabited until 1972. At this time the prisoner camps were formally abolished and in 1974 Tarutao with 50 other islands became Thailand's first Marine National Park.

As the prisoner camps were built from wood only very few remains can be found today. Anyhow, parts of the street that once connected the northern part of the island with the 2 prisoner camps are still there and provide an interesting terrain for mountain biking.
